Meet Your Instructor

Kira Kraftzoff
artistic director and founder of the Rastrelli Cello Quartet, the Russian Quattro and the Rastrelli Chamber Orchestra, was born in 1971 in Leningrad, USSR, now St. Petersburg.
He began his musical and artistic training at the age of six.
At the age of 14, Kraftzoff made his debut with the St. Petersburg Radio Symphony Orchestra, in the St. Petersburg Philharmonic, with Aram Khatchaturian's Cello Concerto. Among his early competitions, one deserves special mention: in the National USSR Competition in 1988, Kraftzoff received the highest award as the youngest finalist.
He continued his studies with Prof. Anatoly Nikitin at the Rimsky-Korsakov Conservatory in St. Petersburg and graduated with distinction in 1994. Afterwards, Kraftzoff worked for four years as a lecturer in Nikitin's cello class while continuing his studies as a student of the legendary Daniel Schafran. In 1993, as a representative of the St. Petersburg Conservatory, the young cellist, was able to participate in Mstislav Rostropovich's first master class in Russia after his long exile. He then came to Stuttgart through a student exchange program and studied there with Prof. Peter Buck, the cellist of the "Melos Quartet".
Kira Kraftzoff has won international competitions in Spain, South Africa, Italy, Germany and Austria. As a soloist, he performed in the Alte Oper Frankfurt, the Tonhalle Zurich, the Concertgebouw Amsterdam, the Laiszhalle Hamburg, the Stefaniensaal Graz, the Mozarteum Salzburg, the Grand Park in Chicago, the Taegue Philharmonie in South Korea and others. Kira Kraftzoff worked with fellow artists such as Gidon Kremer, Krzysztof Penderecki, Gilles Apap, Giora Feidman and David Geringas.
The list of radio and television recordings includes productions for NBC, BR, SWR, HR, NDR and NHK. The TV station "Russia 1" produced a 40-minute documentary about his life and his artistic career.
From 1991 to 1994, before founding the Rastrelli Cello Quartet, Kira Kraftzoff was the first cellist of the "St. Petersburg Soloists," a position which he also held in the "Württemberg Chamber Orchestra" in Heilbronn from 1998 to 2005.
From 2005 to 2010, he was professor of strings at the State University for Art and Culture in St. Petersburg.

Kira really does know what he is talking about. A real master of the instrument, Kira is also capable of “making it easy” by really identifying core problems and simplifying EVERYTHING. He has clearly put many years of work thought into technique and musicality, as well as how to play in a healthy and sustainable way. As someone who has struggled for years with aches and pains while playing, Kira’s methodology has been a real blessing. Ever think the cello was difficult? Think again!
Dear Musicians!
At the beginning of the COVID-19 lockdown I was very disillusioned, as I had no work and my plans to tour with the internationally-known orchestra musicAeterna had all been postponed or cancelled. I have always been very interested in developing my playing further, and have had particular interest in the Russian School - growing up in Australia it is very difficult to have the depth of musical education available to Russians. One of my violinist colleagues from musicAeterna recommended Kira Kraftzov to me for regular online consultations, and I was immediately captivated by the recordings he sent me, and encouraged by his high praise of Kira's artistry and teaching. Following the initial free consultation via Zoom with Kira, I was very impressed with the depth of his insight, and the extent to which he had analysed my recordings and was able to find solutions to technical problems, all with the higher aim of an enhanced interpretation rather than for the sake of virtuosity itself. We worked together over a number of weeks and discussed the basics of cello playing, the difficulties of our industry, as well as the psychology of performance in much detail. Kira has a unique ease of communication (in Russian, English and German!) which simplifies any technical or musical problem, truly befitting his exciting new venture, "Cello is Easy." As a professional with an on-going commitment to self-improvement, I can wholeheartedly recommended Kira to 'cellists and indeed other string players, of all levels. He has enabled me to find greater freedom of expression in my playing, a broader palette of vibrato colours, enhanced left-hand ease and velocity, and deeper tonal resonance on the lower strings. Anyone hesitating at this time to engage in online lessons should wait no longer - Kira is a great asset who will transform your playing and open up new ways of thinking about music, the cello and performance. With warmest wishes, Thomas Rann (Cellist and Founder, Australia Piano Quartet; Guest Cellist Opera Australia Orchestra and musicAeterna Orchestra.)
Cello is Easy completely changed my playing and opened up many possibilities for my interpretations. Now my playing is much more relaxed, free and my sound improved dramatically. I can definitely recommend this to cellists of all levels!
Gracias Kira
I had the chance of attending lessons with Kira Kraftzoff, and what I found there was much more than just a lesson. It was indeed a lesson about the life of music.
True masters are not those who teach you playing the same way as they do, but those who let you bring forth your true cello player.
Kraftzoff knows the cello soul so well that he is able to get to know the player's soul in just one lesson.
Thanks Kira
Gracias Kira
Simply the best
Simply one of the best cellists in the world!
Thank you!
"Oh my goodness, I am so beyond grateful for this program. I had a 4 hour rehearsal last night and had more freedom in my playing and endurance through the rehearsal. I've studies cello for almost 20 years but have never had a teacher approach playing like Kira does. All my tensions are gone! THANK YOU!"
